Brian lived in Anchorage for several years while working as a flight attendant for Alaska Airlines, and Alaska has held a special place in his heart since—he’s been to Tutka Bay Lodge three times in the past 12 years. “Most people’s perception of Alaska is mountains, snow, and fishing, but I want to show our baking retreat participants that you can go see Alaska and enjoy it in a different way,” says Brian. “I’m not outdoorsy. I don’t mountain climb, fish, or camp. When I lived in Alaska, my family and friends would visit, and we would drive the highways and see the most beautiful things. You can drive 30 minutes from town and see a glacier or bears feeding on salmon as they swim upstream in the river. I learned so much about appreciating a place that I never thought possible. I still never hiked or camped. In my career in media working with Alaska destinations to write travel stories, I’ve realized one of the things I love the most is showing the unexpected ways to interact with Alaska if you’re more of a luxury traveler or a non-adventure-seeking traveler like me.
