Mandy Dixon, head pastry chef at Winterlake Lodge, located just north of Anchorage, Alaska, shares her recipe for a comforting and soul-warming cast-iron sweet potato bread. The sweet potato provides a natural sweetness, but the bread itself isn’t too sweet or cloying. That is particularly good if there is some tartness or acid added, so consider adding in chopped fruit or citrus to the mix.
Palmiers might just be the perfect cookie: crisp, buttery layers of puff pastry encased in caramelized sugar. It’s hard to improve on something so classically perfect, but we think our version with cardamom, pecans, and vanilla bean comes pretty close.
