If you believe that butter makes everything better—and we do—then browned butter is about to become your secret weapon. Rich, nutty, and full of depth, it will take your baking game to the next level. Here is your go-to guide for how to make browned butter!

In a medium saucepan, melt cold, unsalted butter over medium heat. Cook for about 14 minutes, swirling occasionally, until butter turns a medium-brown color and has a nutty aroma. Remove from heat, and let cool to room temperature. Use immediately, or cover and refrigerate for up to 1 week.

Cook times may vary depending on your cooktop or type of skillet. Use our handy photo guide to make sure you’re on track.

After 1 minute. The butter is beginning to melt.

After 4-5 minutes. The butter is fully melted.

After 9 minutes. You begin to see some initial browning.

After 12 minutes. The butter continues to brown. Pay attention, it starts going quickly now.

After 13 minutes. You’re nearly there.

After 14 minutes. Perfectly nutty browned butter
