Couples who bake together stay together. Well, that might not be how the saying goes, but it’s proven true for Slovenian bloggers Jernej and Maja Zver. First launched in May 2015, their blog, Jernej Kitchen, came from a sweet place indeed. “It was born from love, our love,” Maja says. In this tasty partnership, Jernej handles the kitchen aspects (hence the blog’s name), creating recipes both sweet and savory, while Maja is the videographer, photographer, and chronicler for their blog. Though they’re based in Slovenia and will often share local specialties like swirled, nutty potica, Maja and Jernej also write their blog in English and tackle a range of cuisines, from French to Italian, so they can reach a wider audience.

Things don’t always translate—like their Slovenian sense of humor, Maja jokes—but Slovenians and Americans definitely have something in common: a love for comfort food. The blog features a lot of custard-rich dishes, like their vanilla cream-packed brioche doughnuts, and a number of butter-forward pastries, like their Viennese Apple Strudel. Of course, you could always stick to a classic with their triple-layer fudge-tastic Naked Dark Chocolate Cake with Cream Cheese. Up next, the Zvers are making a foray into Roman-inspired recipes, but they admit it’s a tad daunting. “Italians are very passionate, and if you get it wrong, they will definitely let you know,” Maja says with a laugh. We have a feeling it’ll be another sweet collaboration.

Must-Bake from the Blog: “Our Brioche Doughnuts with Rich Vanilla Cream have been really popular—because who doesn’t love doughnuts?”
