A Baker’s Guide to Vanilla Paste

Boost the vanilla factor of your baked goods with vanilla paste. Made of vanilla extract and vanilla powder, vanilla paste is an excellent way of adding pure vanilla flavor to your recipes without having to scrape vanilla beans. One of our favorite ways to use vanilla paste is in our Crème Fraîche Pound Cake from our March/April 2019 issue, but you’ll get delicious results by adding it to your own favorite recipes! Before you head out in search of vanilla paste, know that not all paste is created equal. Our simple guide to vanilla paste will help you buy wisely and store it properly.

Buy it: To ensure you’re getting the maximum amount of flavor from your paste, look for a paste that uses ground vanilla bean powder instead of powder collected from the extraction process. The label will specify that it contains vanilla bean seeds or vanilla beans instead of vanilla powder.

Made of premium vanilla bean seeds blended with pure vanilla extract, Heilala Vanilla’s Pure Vanilla Bean Paste is our go-to vanilla paste. It brings warmth and complexity like no other paste on the market. The best part? Their paste packs such a rich flavor that one teaspoon can replace one vanilla bean in any recipe. Consider it your passport to vanilla bliss.

Store it: Vanilla paste can be stored for up to 3 years when kept in a cool, dark environment. Do not refrigerate your paste, or the container will form condensation and spoil the vanilla.
